Tort Reform

Over the last several years, several accidents occurred at residences utilizing propane where the cause of the accident was not the fault of the propane company; rather, it was because someone other than a propane expert tampered with or altered the propane system.  The MPGA seeks legislation to provide simple and clear legal reform to protect propane companies and propane customers.  Specifically, the legislation will protect propane companies and their employees from lawsuits where injury, loss or property damage occurred because propane gas equipment or appliances were modified, repaired or used in an inappropriate fashion without the knowledge of nor consent from the propane company.

Seasonal Weight Restriction Exception

In an effort to reduce wear and tear on Michigan roads, seasonal weight restrictions were established.  For propane, this means trucks delivering propane to customers in February, March, April and sometimes as late as May, must make deliveries with 20-33% less fuel than they normally carry and make 3-4 times as many trips.  At a time when home heating prices are already high, propane consumers should not face higher prices because of government and road commission restrictions on how they receive their heat.  Therefore, the MPGA seeks a solution to allow deliverable fuel trucks, like propane trucks, exceptions or flexibility when seasonal weight restrictions are imposed on Michigan roads.
